James Columbus Braly was born in Crawford County, Missouri on February 9, 1833. He was the second child born to John Eusebius Braly (1805-1880) and Susan Isabelle Hyde (1805-1897).  James had six siblings:  Susan Ann (1831-1916), John Hyde (1835-1923), Margaret Elizabeth (1837-1915), Frank Clark (1839-1862), Susan Isabella (1840-1920), and Eusebin (1846-1889).

In early 1847, James was fourteen and living with his family in Crawford County, Missouri. His father had been sick with Malaria for some time.  They had heard about the wonderful climate of California and decided to join a wagon train heading to California.  Near Fort Hall, Idaho, the Oregon trail headed northwest to Oregon, and the California trail headed southwest to California.  They headed down the California trail for about a day, when they met horsemen traveling from California to Missouri.  They horseman told the group about the fate of the Donner party the previous year, and the group decided to turn back and take the Oregon trail to Oregon.  The family arrived at the Dalles in November, and traveled down the Columbia in a small paddle boat to the Cascaded Falls.  At the falls, they built a flat boat, traveled over the falls and down the river toward Fort Vancouver.  On the way down the river,  they were met by men with boats from the Hudson Bay Company and taken to Fort Vancouver near Portland.  The family reached the settlement of Forest Grove in January, 1848, about twenty miles west of Portland.  There they stayed through 1848 and to the spring of 1849.  As soon as the roads were passable, they left for California.  They reached the town of Fremont, Yolo County, California in early July,1849.

James  moved with his family to Santa Clara County in 1850.  All the family members were living in Santa Clara County at the time the first California State Census was conducted in 1852.

James (age 23) met and married Elizabeth Whisman (age 16) in Santa Clara County, California, on April 23, 1856.  They had eight children over the course of twenty-one years:  Clark (1859-1927), Addison (1864-1926), Susan Isabelle (1867-1950), Mary Elizabeth (1870-1957), Carrie Lee (1872-1929), John Claude (1875-1944), James Douglas (1879-1911), and Margaret G (1881-1910)  .

James and Mary lived in the Santa Clara County until 1870, when they moved to McMinnville, Yamhill County Oregon.  Sometime after the birth of their last child Margaret in 1881, the family moved to San Diego County, California.  James and Mary were living in Los Angeles County in 1902, where James died on July 29, 1902.  James and Mary had been married for forty-six years.  It is not know where James is buried.
